Condition
Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition of widespread body pain, fatigue, and tender points, driven by how the nervous system processes pain rather than damage in the muscles themselves.

What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain condition marked by widespread pain across the body, along with fatigue, poor sleep, and tenderness at specific points. The muscles and joints themselves are not damaged. The problem lies in how the nervous system amplifies pain signals.
This is what we call central sensitisation: the brain and spinal cord turn up the volume on pain, so that normal sensations are felt as painful and genuine pain feels more intense. It is a real, physical change in pain processing, not something imagined.
Fibromyalgia often appears alongside disturbed sleep, difficulty concentrating, and heightened sensitivity to touch, light, or sound. It is more common in women and frequently begins after a period of physical or emotional stress.
Symptoms
- Widespread pain on both sides of the body, above and below the waist
- Deep aching, burning, or tenderness in the muscles
- Persistent fatigue that rest does not relieve
- Unrefreshing sleep and difficulty staying asleep
- Trouble with memory and concentration, often called “fibro fog”
- Heightened sensitivity to pressure, temperature, and noise
How We Treat It
Fibromyalgia responds best to a combined approach rather than any single fix. Where specific muscle knots add to your overall pain load, trigger point injections and dry needling can release those tight bands and reduce a layer of the pain. This gives many patients enough relief to engage more fully in movement and rehabilitation.
Alongside these procedures, we focus on the things that genuinely shift central sensitisation: graded exercise, sleep, and pacing, supported through our wellness and lifestyle care. Our aim is not to chase a cure but to lower your baseline pain, improve your sleep, and help you rebuild activity at a level your body can sustain.
How we treat Fibromyalgia at GABA
Dry Needling
Dry needling is a physiotherapy technique that uses fine needles to release tight muscle knots, or trigger points, that cause local and referred pain.
Trigger Point Injections
Trigger point injections deliver local anaesthetic directly into tight, painful muscle knots to release the contraction and relieve local and referred muscle pain.
